Hot Sorting

I showed the Sorting Out Sorting video from 1980 to my AP Computer Science class today. I also linked their assignment page to the video on Google Video, knowing it’s blocked at school, because they can at least watch it again at home.

Later in the day, one of my students comes back to me and says,

“When I clicked on the link to the video, the filter said was blocked because it’s R-rated. Apparently the hot sorting-on-sorting action was too spicy for the school district. ‘Ooooh, now they’re moving the 1 up to the front! It’s so pornographic!’ “

So when teenagers are making fun of how ridiculous the misclassifications in your filtering technology are, it’s probably time to do something slightly smarter. Like, I dunno, censor less educational material?
